Cherrie Crisostomo is the Publisher of The New Mabuhay Calgary. Her vision is to make the newspaper the preferred media channel of the Filipino community. She brings eleven years of advertising experience gained from different companies operating in the Philippines, Singapore, and Canada.

She strives for continuous improvement and believes that by publishing balanced, informative and relevant news in Mabuhay Calgary, readers will take pleasure in its content and Filipino Calgarians will take pride to be a part of this publication.

She enjoys watching movies and loves reading inspirational books. Playing soccer, golf, running and working out is her stress-reliever.

EDITORS:

Will Tigley has been a Senior Editor and News Director with Mabuhay Calgary since its launch in 2005. He is proud to be involved in a project like Mabuhay that brings together Filipino Calgarians and is dedicated to reporting the news that is of relevance to the community.

Will brings over seven years of Communications experience in the corporate, voluntary and government sectors to provide an ethical and vital voice to the Filipino community in Calgary.

Hoping to nurture and grow emerging Filipino talent in our city, Will encourages other Filipino creators, writers, and artists to contribute their work for publication to a public paper like Mabuhay.

 Anne Claire Danan has been the Senior Editor and News Director for Mabuhay Calgary since 2005. She has a BA in Communications and brings to us more than ten years of communications experience which includes writing to event and project management.

Coming to Calgary at the age of three, Anne Claire’s parents never let her stray from her Filipino roots. She’s still fluent in Tagalog and enjoys cooking Filipino food.



With Mabuhay Calgary’s stories and featured Filipinos, Anne Claire hopes that our community is inspired and proud to be Pinoy

Darlene Casten has been writing and taking pictures for Mabuhay Calgary for four years. She completed an Applied Degree in Communications specializing in Journalism in 2002 and has been working as a reporter at a weekly, tri-weekly and daily newspapers ever since. She is now the Assistant-Editor at a weekly newspaper near Calgary.

 Darlene is married to a Filipino and has been enjoying involvement in the Filipino community for more than 10 years. She enjoys watching the local basketball leagues and covering hard-hitting issues. Darlene has a three-year-old son named Angelo.

CONTRIBUTORS:

 

Victoria Lee graduated from the SAIT Photojournalism program in 2002. Since then her life has taken her on more of a theatrical journey which involves working for a dinner theatre for three years, and graduating with a degree in drama from the University of Calgary. Although she loves theatre, she always knew something was missing. That missing link was her writing. She was excited about the opportunity to write for a newspaper again when the opportunity came up to write for Mabuhay Calgary. _DSC7555VictoriaLeeV2.jpg

 

Lindsay Santos is a fourth year English major and a senior adviser of the University of Calgary Filipino Students' Association (FSA). By writing for Mabuhay Calgary, she hopes to help give more exposure to the diverse organizations and groups of talented and ambitious men and women within the Filipino Calgarian community who share a strong sense of pride and appreciation for the Filipino culture, which they strive to share with others in the community.

Mark Santos is a freelance illustrator and part time art teacher born and raised in Calgary.  He was a classmate of Kevin Cortez at the Alberta College of Art & Design where he earned a Bachelor of Design.  Mark joined Mabuhay Calgary in 2006 creating the Hoy, Pare! comic strip with Mabuhay Calgary Senior Editor Will Tigley.  He is now joined at the paper with his sister/writer Lindsay and brother/male model Vince.  Together with his siblings and the rest of the Mabuhay team, Mark hopes to bring fun and laughter into the lives of people (especially Filipinos) everywhere.

Darla Umaming is a new contributor for The Ne Mabuhay Calgary.  Being a student, she joins us with the hopes of bridging the Calgary youth with the Filipino community.  Although Darla is in the medical field, her passion for writing has been an influence to her being a contributor of current local (Calgary) and homeland (Philippines) event that is of great relevance to the Filipino community.

PHOTOGRAPHERS:

Romeo Valera began his photography journey in 1996 where he worked in the Philippines as a territory representative. He worked for a large photo supply company and his job was to sell film, photo paper and chemicals to professional photographers and photo labs. The company spoiled him by giving him a car, cell phone and the entire Philippines as his playground.

After three years of being surrounded by the photography world, Romeo was tired of assisting photographers. He was ready and itching to take his own photos.

He later worked with renowned Philippine advertising photographer, Benigno Toda. Romeo gained the experience that made his art what it is today.

Romeo’s expertise involves shooting photos for corporate ads, elaborate weddings, government events, and famous actors for magazine layouts.

Romeo’s talent extends from portraits to photojournalism. He loves what he does and it is evident in his photos.

Jeff Cruz’ photographic journey started as a kid when he mail ordered a plastic toy camera from a Bazooka Joe gum wrapper.  He enjoyed taking pictures of his classmates and friends.  In 2007, Jeff rediscovered his passion and became a freelance photographer.  

In 2009, Jeff joined Mabuhay Calgary in order to provide an outlet for his talent and to stay in touch with his Filipino heritage.  When not shooting for Mabuhay, Jeff is a busy wedding and travel photographer.  Jeff's work can be viewed at: www.jcruzfoto.com

Daniel Liu has been a prolific photographer in the Calgary community since 2009 when he first decided to take up photography. With a commitment for excellence and a passion for the photographic arts, Daniel’s diligence and unique style has propelled his work towards widespread recognition amongst the community.

Art has been a way of life for Daniel for as long as he can remember. During his high school years, Daniel, under the guidance of his mentor, under took various forms of art, familiarizing himself in the trade. When Daniel went on the pursue his post secondary education in the form of cooking, that too was a way for him to express his art, and in 2008, Daniel successfully graduated from George Brown College in Toronto with a Diploma in Culinary Management.

Although, with a firm foundation in contemporary cooking, Daniel never forgot about his roots and in 2009 he took up photography, an art form that combined his love for painting, self-expression, and traveling.  Soon after the relaunch of The New Mabuhay Calgary, Daniel became a proud member of the new Mabuhay team, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rocky Serate is a full time Software Developer with a burning passion for photography.  He started his journey when he began exploring the aspect of model photography around the summer of 2009.  Since then, Rocky has been doing creative, lifestyle, and fashion shoots to learn more about the art and the technical facets of photography.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER:

Kevin Cortez is the graphic designer/layout artist for The New Mabuhay Calgary and has been involved since September 2009.

Kevin graduated from the Alberta College of Arts and Design in May 2009 with a degree in Visual Communication Design. As a Philippine-born Chinese, a trip back home after 17 years of living in Canada inspired Kevin to be more involved with the Filipino community.

 What seems like perfect timing, Kevin was referred by Mark Santos to help re-launch Mabuhay Calgary. Everything else from here is history. Kevin is very pleased to be involved with such a reputable Filipino community newspaper: The New Mabuhay Calgary.
